Anyone who thinks that the Libertarian Party is a logical choice to being a conservative Republican should understand how often Libertarian candidates help Democrats get elected.
The Senate race in Montana is a perfect example. Democrat Jon Tester has been projected to win with 49.4% against Republican Matt Rosendale with 47.8%. But there was a third party Libertarian candidate named Rick Brekenridge with almost no campaign to speak of who pulled in 2.9% of the vote.
Just as what happened in Virginia 4 years ago, the Libertarian candidate received a valuable assist with a statewide printing and mailing boosting the Brekenridge campaign and no one knows where the money came from.
In Virginia, an investigation proved that the Democrat Party paid for a similar state-wide mailing that helped the Libertarian candidate pull in just enough votes to allow the Democrat to narrowly pass the Republican.
Whether or not the Libertarian candidates are suffering delusions of grandeur or just overblown egos, their presence on a ballot enables the Democrats to siphon off votes that would have go to the Republican.
Here's the complete story on the Virginia election.
